African Leaders gathered for the “Africa 2020 Access to Renewables Initiative” in Addis Ababa

 

Addis Ababa, 17 March 2015 – A technical consultative meeting for the Africa 2020 Access to Renewables initiative was held in United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Co-organised by UNEP, UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and African Union, this meeting aimed to consult with some African countries and relevant partners on opportunities to boost the production of renewable energies in Africa up to 10 gigawatts by 2020.

In his opening remarks, UNEP Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw stressed that this initiative will build on on-going Africa’s low carbon and green economy initiatives, considering an average of 32% energy access in the continent.
