Funding and partnerships

Since 1972, UN Environment Programme has served as the leading global authority on the environment. Our ambition is to inform, enable and inspire nations and peoples to improve their quality of life – without compromising that of future generations. We work under the umbrella of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, identifying and addressing the most relevant environmental issues of our time.

Our work is made possible by partners who fund and champion our mission. We depend on voluntary contributions for 95 per cent of our income. Voluntary contributions consist of both flexible and earmarked funds. The Environment Fund is our core source of flexible funds and supports the bedrock of our work worldwide. It provides for the essential capacity to implement our programme of work, which is endorsed by our 193 Member States. It is complemented by softly earmarked funds. Earmarked funds then enable us to expand and replicate our programme in more countries and with more partners.

Around the world, we work in partnerships with governments, the scientific community, the private sector, civil society, and other United Nations entities and international organizations. We bring together all partners to agree on solutions to our common challenges.
